Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is the most common alkali in the world. It is a white flaked mass, highly hygroscopic, highly soluble in water and alcohol. Sodium hydroxide is characterized by excellent solubility in water and alcohol solutions. In the process of interaction with acids, dissolution in water, dilution of an aqueous solution, a large amount of heat is released. The substance can destroy glass and porcelain objects, organic materials, including fabric and leather. Caustic soda exhibits an active reaction with light metals and their alloys, which is accompanied by the release of large amounts of hydrogen. By interacting with carbon dioxide in the air, sodium hydroxide binds it. As a result, over time, a white precipitate forms - soda ash. The substance does not react with carbon and chromium-nickel steel, most rubber materials and synthetic polymers.

Its scope covers many industries:
- chemical industry (caustic soda is used for titration of aluminum, neutralization of acids, production of detergents and various oils, and also as a reaction catalyst);
- pulp and paper industry (for the production of various types of paper, cardboard, wood fiber boards, etc.);
- food industry (as a food additive E524 for the production of various drinks, ice cream, chocolate, etc., as well as for cleaning food equipment);
- automotive industry (for the production of alkaline batteries);
- light industry (as a bleach for fabrics, mainly cotton, linen, and also in the production of silk);
- for the production of biofuel.

Granulated caustic soda is packaged in polypropylene bags with a valve and a polyethylene liner with a weight capacity of 25 kg on pallets up to 1000 kg and in soft containers specialized for bulk products made of polypropylene fabric such as MKR with a net weight of no more than 1000 kg.

Granulated caustic soda should be stored in closed warehouses that prevent moisture from entering, in stacks on pallets, flooring, and gratings. Caustic soda packed in polypropylene bags with a valve must not be stored in a vertical position. When stored in heated warehouses, bags and transport packages with caustic soda are placed at a distance of at least one meter from heating devices. Caustic soda is transported by all modes of transport in accordance with the rules for the transportation of dangerous goods in force for this type of transport.
